Real Talk. Race and Real Estate
Is the Self-segregation in the real estate investment community real?
What’s Real Estate and Race got to with it?
Welcome to Real Talk. Good afternoon everybody and thanks for tuning in. For those who don’t know me yet, this is Mike from Atlanta Georgia aka the WholesaleWhiz with the Wholesalepreneur YouTube channel.
In today’s video footage I wanted touch on a subject that’s been on my mind for quite some time now. In recent years I’ve noticed an odd trend in the real estate investment community, where minority REIA GROUPS started popping up like mushrooms.
And they didn’t really group around the topic of real estate investment. Their CenterPoint was the topic of race and ethnicity. So I’ve asked myself whether this is a good development or not and why are these people limiting themselves. Names like Minority Real Estate Group and Mentoring, Hispanic real estate group, Asian realtors to name a few and the list goes on and on and on.
I want know what’s your take on this and should race, gender, ethnicity etc. even play a role in who you’re doing business with. Guys what’s your take on it and where do we draw the line?
So I started asking myself the question:
Is the trend of self-segregation in the real estate investment community real or is it just a mere reflection of American society today?
So what does that mean? In order to fully understand I went online and looked up the Wikipedia’s definition of Auto-segregation or self-segregation: (Let me read it out to you guys) So here is the definition: Auto-segregation or self-segregation is the separation of a religious or ethnic group from the rest of society in a state by the group itself. This could also mean inability for a normal social interaction and a form of social exclusion. Through auto-segregation, the members of the separate group can establish their own services, and maintain their own traditions and customs. Now Minority REIA groups and the self-segregation movement in American society today are exactly doing that.
And their strongest argument is that minorities have been excluded from mainstream America for so long, that there is a need to form these groups. So basically what they are doing is the very same thing they are criticizing in the first place. They excluding themselves by self-segregating, but what they are really doing at the same time excluding other groups for example whites from their organization. And these same people would cry foul, if somebody would start something like an all-white REIA group or Whites only REIA group etc. You get my point.
